Solar Panel FAQ
How long will my solar panel system last?
Many solar panels installed in the 1970s are still operating today and technology since that time has only improved. The real piece of information to be aware of is that every year a panel loses about half of a percent of its power rating. This means that in 25 years a panel will likely only produce 87.5% of the power it started with. However, most solar power systems will still produce the amount of necessary power 30 to 40 years down the road. It is a good idea to have a system installed that gives you more power than you require when you first install it.
Thus, a solar panel will last roughly 30 to 40 years.
Are solar panels hard to maintain?
Once installed, solar panels require very little maintenance. They have no moving parts so they will not break down like other appliances. The only maintenance required is to check the solar panels about once or twice a year for debris and dirt. If light cannot hit the panels because of debris, then the system will be less effective.
Often, spraying a panel with a garden hose once a year does the trick.
